Cavalleria Rusticana, "the opera that invented the mafia," will be presented in concert, performed in Italian with English supertitles.
In a Sicilian village on Easter morning, passion and vengeance ignite this powerful one-act opera. When soldier Turiddu returns home to find his former love Lola married to Alfio, he begins a new romance with Santuzza. But desire proves too strong, and Turiddu and Lola begin a secret affair. Upon discovering their betrayal, a devastated Santuzza reveals all to Alfio. Bound by Sicilian honor, Alfio challenges Turiddu to a fatal duel. Before meeting his destiny, Turiddu begs his mother Lucia to care for Santuzza should he not return.
Through its searing drama and unforgettable music, this opera created an enduring portrait of Sicilian culture, justice, and revenge that would influence generations of mafia narratives in literature and film.
